What is Proofreading?
“The process of finding and correcting mistakes in a text before it is printed or put online.” – Cambridge Dictionary
Proofreading takes place towards the end of the production process and consists of the final check of a text before it can be printed or other material before it is published. Traditionally, proofreaders read page proofs after they come back from the typesetter or designer, but nowadays the term is often used to mean the final polish of the text.
Proofreaders check for sense, spelling, grammar and punctuation, making sure that there is consistency throughout the text. They ensure that the text has been organised accurately, looking in particular at headings and at any illustrations or tables so that they are correctly placed and captioned within the text. Proofreaders also check additional pages, such as the cover, the prelims and the back pages, as well as page numbers and running heads.
Why Use a Proofreader?
A proofreader will ensure that your content looks professional and that there are no lingering errors.
It is always better to use proofreaders because they will read the text with a fresh eye. They will see the text from a new reader’s perspective and question when the meaning is not clear. They are also used to work with house style guides, which sets rules for spelling, presentation, etc, to ensure consistency and have a mastery of the language.
You might think that with all the tools available online to check grammar and spelling, proofreaders are now becoming obsolete. However, technology will never understand the sense and subtleties of the text in the same way a human would and while they will correct many mistakes, they will not find them all.
